ABSTRACT
This article examines the technical parameters, evaluation, and potential for improving the performance of railway buffers of various designs used in rail freight transport. The research primarily focuses on two key parameters: damping forces and energy absorption. Parameter values were measured at various ambient temperatures in which the buffers operate during operation. The study presents selected research results and a method for evaluating and selecting the best buffer design. A computational procedure was then conducted to select the buffer that would be the best design for specific applications. Part of the work consists of an analysis to determine the probability distribution of the force loading the buffer system at which it reaches its limit state. The random nature of this force for the system results from the random values of the damping forces of the individual buffers that make up the buffer system between wagons. A concept for a procedure enabling the increase of the force transmitted by the buffer system, at which the system reaches its limit state, defined as the blocking of all four buffers, was then developed and presented. Numerical verification of the calculations performed showed a possible increase in this force when using the developed procedure and a significant reduction in the difference in forces transmitted by the pairs of buffers on either side of the wagon axle, which is also a desirable effect in operation. The developed procedure requires no financial outlay or structural changes to the buffers used, only their proper assembly within the set.
