ABSTRACT
Every commercial airport in the world has its own aeronautical navigation procedures, which help manage and control air traffic in the airport’s operational area. The Central Transport Hub (Centralny Port Komunikacyjny, CPK), as Poland’s new international air transport hub, will be no exception. Based on the analysis of the topography and land use in the immediate and wider surroundings of the CPK, which was carried out in Part I of the publication series, it was possible to design the general structure of the STAR arrival, SID departure and ILS approach procedures for all runways of the new airport. Based on international technical guidelines and standards of the ICAO and national standards of the Polish Civil Aviation Authority and the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency, it was possible to establish the preliminary structure of 28 navigation procedures. They serve as a prelude to further work related to optimising air traffic in the Warsaw region, and from a longer and broader perspective, they will help achieve the strategic goals of the CPK and ensure the continuous development of Poland’s air transport sector. Based on the established navigation procedures, four anticipated main traffic flows of aircraft to and from the CPK have been determined: the north-west direction – transatlantic routes serving the United States and Canadian markets as well as Scandinavia; the south-west direction – transcontinental routes serving the Western European and South-Western European markets; the south-east direction – intra-continental routes serving the Central European and Balkan Peninsula markets, and transcontinental routes serving the Turkish, Caucasian, Middle Eastern, Persian Gulf and Indian Peninsula markets; and the north-east market – intra-continental routes serving the East European, Finland and the Baltic States’ market, and transcontinental routes serving the Central Asian, Chinese, Korean and Japanese market. All of the aforementioned traffic flows are in line with the current development strategy for the network of connections of the Warsaw Chopin Airport (ICAO: EPWA) and are also in line with the development strategy for the main national Polish carrier, namely LOT Polish Airlines.
