ABSTRACT
Previous research shows that using a plate as the stiffness of a Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) and no added mass to a beam-like TMD are feasible as a damper. This research combines those two concepts by using a plate model as a new TMD (Plate TMD). The absence of auxiliary mass makes the model lighter and simpler than conventional models. This study also uses a new method to adjust the TMD natural frequency by conducting a parametric design study of the plate’s outer diameter and hole spoke width with a circular plate shape. The study has shown that the target natural frequency of the plate can be obtained with a lighter mass in the minimum spoke width selection. This model was applied to a beam-like cable model for simulations and to an all-aluminum alloy cable for experiments. The study used finite element method (FEM) simulations and experiments with an electrodynamic shaker. The results show that the Plate TMD model is feasible and can attenuate the vibration at the target natural frequency. In this study, the response amplitude ratio decreased by more than 93 percent.
