ABSTRACT
A way how to select the ceramic coating thickness with respect to axially symmetrical thermal stresses in a casting machine piston with a horizontal shot sleeve has been discussed. An application of a technological ceramic outer layer in the piston enhances its tribological properties. The condition that stresses in tension in the outer ceramic layer are lower than the tensile strength has been proposed as a selection criterion.
