The development of enterprises, nations, and regions is linked to the creation of innovative solutions. Assessing innovative solutions at any stage of their development—according to the TRL scale—is a risky undertaking. Out of a vast number of inventions, only a small fraction reach high levels of technological readiness, thereby offering a chance for commercialization. In many instances, research activity concludes merely with the granting of a patent and the associated industrial property protection. Only a few inventions reach the ninth level of the TRL scale, and only a small proportion of them achieve commercial success.
This paper presents a proposal for evaluating innovative solutions using multi-criteria methods. The method selected as the evaluation tool is AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process).
The aim of of this paper is to present an approach in which inventions are not treated as isolated entities, but as elements of a broader system, with this systemic positioning determining the criteria used for their evaluation. Accordingly, a sample system and its associated criteria were defined, and the AHP method was used to evaluate a selected group of inventions. The evaluation within the system model incorporated four objects connected by six relationships. The objects are: the inventions under evaluation, and the socio-economic environment in the present, past, and future. The relationships adopted were: commercialization feasibility, environmental performance of the solution, implementation difficulty, originality of the idea, effective recycling , development potential. The selection of criteria—which equates to defining the system boundaries and the relationships between elements (objects)—depends on the objective of the evaluation.
The innovative solutions subject to evaluation were selected from among 238 inventions submitted in 2024 and 2025 to the 14th and 15th editions of the Student-Inventor competition. The submitted innovative solutions represented different stages of advancement, which can be related to the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) model.
