Self-sufficient solar photovoltaic (PV) water pumping systems have surfaced as an eco-friendly alternative for agricultural irrigation in isolated areas where utility grid connectivity is restricted or non-existent. However, the intermittent nature of solar irradiance introduces significant variations in photovoltaic power generation, resulting in DC-link voltage fluctuations and deterioration of motor drive performance, which may interrupt water pumping operation. This study suggests a battery-supported independent solar photovoltaic-powered switched reluctance motor (SRM) water pumping system that comprises an ultrahigh gain quadratic boost (UHGQB) converter. The proposed architecture integrates a battery energy storage system (BESS) with the DC-link through a bidirectional DC–DC converter to ensure unceasing power availability throughout the periods of reduced or unavailable solar generation. Furthermore, a perturb-and-observe (P&O) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique is utilized to optimize solar power extraction amongst fluctuating environmental variables. The proposed system is modelled and validated in the MATLAB/Simulink environment under dynamically varying solar irradiance conditions. The simulation outcomes exhibit proficient maximum power point tracking, smooth transitions between battery charging and discharging states, and stable regulation of the DC-link voltage during the operational period. The coordinated operation of the UHGQB converter and the battery energy storage system enables the switched reluctance motor to maintain stable speed, smooth electromagnetic torque, and well-regulated phase currents despite significant variations in photovoltaic power. Furthermore, uninterrupted motor operation and continuous water pumping are achieved during the complete absence of photovoltaic generation through automatic battery-assisted power support. The proposed architecture effectively enhances the operational reliability, energy continuity, and stability of standalone photovoltaic-fed SRM water pumping systems, demonstrating its suitability for remote agricultural irrigation applications operating under intermittent solar energy conditions.
