Optimization processes have emerged as effective techniques in engineering disciplines. Recently, this has evolved into topology optimization, enabling material distribution within models based on loading constraints. Through topology optimization, the designs become lighter and use fewer materials, leading to cost savings and environmental benefits. Upon a thorough examination of prior review articles, it was observed that each article focused on a specific field, material, or engineering software. Consequently, this review offers a comprehensive analysis of various domains within mechanical engineering, including software such as SolidWorks, Autodesk, and ANSYS, as well as the materials employed in topology optimization. In addition, it explores the historical developments, methodologies, and applications of topology optimization across diverse engineering disciplines. It elucidates the objectives of employing this optimization technique, particularly in terms of cost efficiency, time management, complex structural design, and energy reduction. This review emphasizes the advantages of topology optimization for engineers, with a particular focus on mechanical engineers, and highlights the tools and optimization methods employed to achieve optimal results. Current research is predominantly centered on weight reduction to decrease costs while maintaining safety under load, a strategy that is increasingly favored in industries to enhance productivity.
